If your rock climbing friend or family member is anything like me, we are easily pleased. You’re also in luck because we climbers tend to be cheap. If that sounds like you, then rest easy, because I’m going to share with you some of my favorite gifts that any rock climber would love to get. Parkour certainly isn’t the most materialistic of sports. Instead, make the gifts you give a traceur supportive of what makes the sport important and fun to them.
These Dry Ice tools are an innovative way to practice ice climbing. They will give your climbing friends the ability to learn and practice ice and mixed climbing before deciding to invest in outdoor gear. These tools are great for indoor training and strength building as your friends add another type of climbing to their outdoor arsenal. It’s worth the price if you or the climber you’re shopping for does a lot of outdoor climbing and exploring in these areas . One of the first things I ever bought when I started training for climbing more seriously was a set of these Metolius Rock Rings.

A skirt might seem like a strange gear option for a climber, but hear me out. Another great gift for boulderers is getting them a kneebar pad from Send Climbing. These are perfect for climbing in caves as you find in Hueco Tanks or even The Rocklands. Climbers end up in some pretty cool and photogenic places, but it’s nerve-wracking to take your phone out to snap a photo and worry that you might drop it down a cliff.
Though we try to avoid cutting our rope at all costs (Michael and I still haven’t had to do this yet) it’s good to be prepared to have a way to do this if there is an emergency of some sort. It provides peace of mind and an extra measure of safety in my climbing system. I pretty much only use the GriGri to belay Michael because he weighs so much more than me. It’s nice to know that if I go flying up into the air on a big lead fall, that I’ll have him no matter what. We got these for each other as Christmas gifts one year, and were absolutely thrilled with them. There are a ton of great climbing brushes out there, but this Footless Bird climbing brush is especially awesome.

Some of these are tech-based — and naturally at the higher end of the budget. Parkour is considered to be an extreme sport and can be hazardous. The videos we produce feature members of the STORROR team of professional parkour athletes, who have each been training for more than 15 years, and other very experienced practitioners.
It might seem strange to say about such a physical activity, but books really can help here. Gift your traceur some of the must-read books on free running. The Parkour Roadmap by Max Henry collects thoughts on techniques and how the sport has evolved from experts from across the planet.

If you really can’t determine what gift ideas for climbers might be best, it’s always safe to get them an REI Gift Card. You can choose the amount and can even go as low as $10. It’s a great option if you really don’t know what to get the climber in your life, especially if they are the kind of person that seems like they “already own everything”. Send me exclusive offers, unique gift ideas, and personalized tips for shopping and selling on Etsy.
Stick clips are especially indispensable when clipping first bolts where the climbing is hard or sketchy and you would be unprotected if you fell. Some routes and climbing areas are even bolted with the idea that people will stick clip the first bolt in mind. From the practical presents to the nice-to-have rock climbing gifts, there is a limitless list of options to choose from. Perhaps the most important gift you can give a traceur is the experience itself, though.

I like the chalk buckets that fold down and that have zippered pockets to store things like your finger file and nail clippers. The Black Diamond Mondo Chalk Bucket checks off all these tick list items and makes for a great present for climbers. The Organic Lunch Bag Chalk Bucket is also a great choice and comes in extra colorful patterns. When rock climbers get callouses on their hands or tear some skin on the wall, it’s best to file it down immediately. Otherwise, it might get worse or turn into an even bigger “flapper” .
The Trango Beta Stick Evo Stick Clip is a well-designed stick clip that is very popular at the crag. It has a lightweight, telescoping pole, so it’s easy to stick in or attach to a pack when it’s collapsed. The full-length zippers on each side of the skirt make it incredibly easy to transition from belayer to climber. Comfy and cute, this is the perfect and unexpected gift for your climber friend.
Michael and I tend to like smaller diameter ropes because they are lighter, and we prefer a 70m rope so we can do longer pitches. PETZL has some great options for ropes in lots of different lengths, and a 60m to 70m rope is usually a pretty safe bet for a gift. Rock climbing helmets have come a really long way since I first started climbing. Michael and I both invested in these Black Diamond Vector Helmets, and we love them so much! They are super lightweight compared to our older helmets, and they have great coverage while still feeling breathable.
Well, much like parkour itself, gift hunting for the traceur in your life benefits from some exploration and creativity. Yes, there will be some items that you can get from your local sports store. But if you understand a little about the activity, and about the person you’re gifting to, you can produce some unique holiday cheer that can enhance their enjoyment of their urban athletics. Rocky Talkies would make a perfect gift for climbers who love to do multi-pitch climbs where climbing partners often are out of sight and earshot of each other. A good harness is essential to rope climbing, and one of the first pieces of gear that gym climbers need to invest in. The Black Diamond Momentum Harness is a great harness to start with, and a great gift for any new gym climber .
Most of us first became familiar with parkour as a result of YouTube videos. If the traceur you’re getting a gift for is into sharing their runs, then a GoPro camera can be the ideal addition to their gear. The popular online retailers stock all of this, but if you’re committed to buying locally, seek out your neighborhood electronics or camera store. While parkour makes use of all areas of the body, the feet aside, it’s the legs that are likely to see the most action. It’s also an area that requires a great deal of flexibility, so stretch materials are always best here. Most popular sports brands now produce stretch-woven workout pants, which are great for free running, and you should be able to get them at reasonable prices from most sports stores.
While the Garmin inReach Mini is a pricey gift, this in my opinion would be the ULTIMATE gift for any climber . There are a variety of holds and angles to climb on to practice all kinds of strength and skill exercises. Many gyms these days also have weights, pull-up bars, and fingerboards as well. It’s the only one I bring with me, and it’s strong enough to cut through the rope.
